My friend Brady and I have laid the groundwork and methodology for a studio based class that studies informal settlements, ideas of 'homelessness', and the wicked problems associated with them to tease out a better understanding of each of ourselves. We have attempted to open avenues of new research regarding informal settlements, comparative studies with traditional settlements, ecological impacts, and issues related to urbanisms. Tomorrow is our big presentation of our findings to the College. We have just finished a 40 page document that will be published by the CED in some fashion. It may get posted sometime in the near future

HARGREAVES in New Orleans

Went to check out the future site of this massive project in New Orleans going forward under the tutelage of Hargreaves and Associates. I don't have much information on it, except the project is about 4.5 miles along the Mississippi. It is utilizing old wharfs all the way from the lower Garden District through the Quarter, the Marigny and the Bywater to the Naval Yard. The program includes integration of the trolley line, bike paths and pedestrian walkovers. The large levee wall prevented too much investigation in the section where we were, but the view and location is primo. Its an exciting project for the city. They need to make sure its for the city first and not bow down to the tourist dollar.

URBAN PARK WET DREAM...Bayou Oaks Golf Course

Just got back from the big easy and came across this amazing potential for New Orleans that will never happen. In the middle of the city this golf course has been sitting since Katrina. We really enjoyed our time out there walking around, observing the activity in this emerging ecosystem. The plan is to restore it back into a golf course.....booooooooooo!!! The city of New Orleans could have a park that is absolutely unique. Instead they will choose the obvious, boring and unsustainable.

This is by my partner Jacob Lange and I, our entry for the WPA 2.0 competition out of UCLA this past fall. We didn't win, but learned tons about this sort of conceptual urban thinking.

We seek projects that consider and explore the value of infrastructure not merely as an engineering endeavor, but as a robust design opportunity to strengthen communities and revitalize the city. Unlike the previous era, the next generation of such projects will require surgical integration into the existing urban fabric, and will work by intentionally linking systems of points, lines and landscapes, hybridizing economies with ecologies and over- lapping architecture with planning. These systems include but are not limited to parks, schools, open space, vehicle storage, sewers, roads, transportation, storm water, waste, food systems, recreation, local economies, ‘green’ infrastructure, fire prevention, markets, landfills, energy-generating facilities, cemeteries, and smart utilities.

Nice graphics, interesting idea. The industrial canal in New Orleans, aside from being a busy shipping lane, has been the center of ship maintenance and repainting and jebus know what else for perhaps 200 years. Them waters must be thick with lead, heavy metals and carcinogens!

I have dabbled in Italo disco for years, never fully understanding the breadth of this musical genre. This is a huge body of music from the 80's that is typified by the cheesiest (therefore coolest) sounding drum machines and driving synth lines with outfits at times looking like they came straight out of Buck Rogers. This stuff is totally nuts and...well...pretty awkward at times.....check this one out!

Somebody has fallen down on the job of keeping this thing updated in recent months, so I have stepped in to get it going again. Lots has been going on in the way of projects and cool happenings. The big thing going down right now is the final cut of a multimedia film presentation that myself and two other classmates had been working on over the past couple of months. It is finished and available to be viewed online at our college's website HERE. There is also an article (available online HERE) in Landscape Architect and Specifier News authored by one of my partners that should help to give some background on the project. The site is featuring some of my work from last year. On the home splash page, they are images 8 & 9. (You can check out high resolution images of this same project in a post from Feb. 2008 'Martin Sculpture Garden'.) Under the 'Landscape Architecture MLA' heading the first image that pops up when you go there, the photo next to a drawing that looks like mold overrunning french toast is mine. i'm going to post that whole project later on when i get a good scan.
On a side note The Melvins rocked the nether regions of Athens on Monday....was a good time!

Wow, year one classes are DONE. A couple of exams are left to finish and that is it! The past couple of weeks have been brutal with its work load, with such highlights as the 80+ hour site engineering nightmare project. The project featured a huge program for a tiny site, and so many steps to complete that for amateurs like us it was a humongous challenge and extremely time consuming. I hope to post some projects from this semester soon, so be looking out for that.

Martin Sculpture Garden

Here are my drawings (each about 24" x 32") and model (about 12" x 16") for a client who is building a scaled down replica of Khan's Kimball Art Museum. They have a sweet collection of outdoor sculpture with an emphasis on kinetics that requires an equally sweet public garden. I am presenting this project out of order, for no real reason. We actually built a model of this first then did the drawings. I will post the model next.
The object of this project was to "tunnel" through a solid mass that is 64'x64'x192', and to create a pathway or a journey for a person to experience. We did this as a model at 1/8" scale, so the actual model is 8"x8"x24". Then we did actual size drawings of the models in ink.
My goal was to explode or pull as much of the interior mass through the entrance and exit, leaving catwalks for the pathway. Then it evolved into a kinetic, moving experience that the subject triggered by stepping onto a gigantic lever that powers a gearbox. This causes the entrance to move in about 40 feet while at the same time the exit pushes out, and also completes pathway connections. If you cant see it in the drawings, the model should make it totally clear.

I live to tell how brutal of a run The Bear was. The climb was no joke, especially starting at the 3 mile mark, the incline just got steeper and never relented for the last 2 miles. Out of 800+ participants, I placed #430 crossing the finish line at 56 minutes 13 seconds. Can't wait to try it again next year. (click photo to enlarge)

The annual Asheville Arts Council fund raiser was last Saturday night. My Heroe was rocking the decks at the White Lightnin' party. Freak must have lost his mind that night with what he was wearing. I'll post some pictures of him as they become available. The party hosts printed up 150 of his last Vol.2 mix and gave them away as party favors called "xxx SpeakeasyListenin". We were all diggin' the discofied funk and soul jams he was kicking out until that ruby colored she-devil decided peeps were having too much fun, but not before the sub-woofer blew up. Good times.

World Naked Bike Ride

On Saturday I rode with the Critical Mass "bare as you dare" gang around downtown Asheville during peak tourist lunch time. What a trip watching all the bystanders with their mouths open, in sheer confusion witnessing a group of 30-35 cyclists cruising by, on the bare side. I, of course, was not rocking the full monty.

Keeping Tha Updates

In preparation for my fall endeavor, I think keeping a generalized update on my progress at grad school (UGA) in the form of a blog could be somewhat good for those interested in my progress. I hope that this will prove valuable for me as well, as a sort of timeline of whats up. I hope to keep the boredom factor down to a minimum but in the interest of documentation, there may be information presented from time to time that exceeds the average readers threshold of interest.
